I discovered Oolong tea 21 years ago while living in Japan. Although Oolong tea is of Chinese origin, it is popular in Japan and available in almost any convenience store. In most cases, we bought that tea in refrigerated bottles, so we enjoyed it ice cold. This recipe provides a hot version of the Oolong tea mixed with orange juice, making it an ideal coffee alternative.
Hot orange juice with Oolong tea makes for a great breakfast drink. While it does contain some caffeine I find the caffeine from teas less harsh than the one found in coffee. Teas create a more sustainable high than caffeine; this is my experience. Coffee is known for its high and low effects, it energizes then it crashes. On the other hand, we typically drink orange juice cold. In this recipe we mix the juice of a small orange with hot water for the tea, resulting in a warm or hot beverage. Great for spring, fall and winter seasons when you want to start the day with something warm and energizing. Orange contains vitamin C, another energy booster.
Advantages of hot orange juice
Hot orange juice with Oolong tea contains no milk or dairy, and only a bit of natural sugar from the orange. It is served hot or warm, meaning that it is easier to absorb and digest compared to a cold juice. When we get up, it can feel comforting to enjoy our first drink warm.
Hot orange juice with Oolong tea
Ingredients
- 1 small or medium orange
- 1 large cup hot water leave room for the volume of orange juice you will be adding
- 1 tea bag Oolong tea
Instructions
- Bring the hot water to a boil by microwaving or heating in a pan.
- Cut and squeeze the orange in a juicer.
- Pour the hot water over the orange pulp to extract more of it into the juice. The pulp also contains fiber, which helps absorb the sugar naturally present in the fruit.
- Pour the mix into a large cup.
- Add the Oolong tea to the mix and let it rest for about 5 minutes.
